Focus and Scope

Kognitif: Jurnal Riset HOTS Pendidikan Matematika aims to publish high-quality research articles in the field of mathematics education, with a particular emphasis on Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS). The journal welcomes theoretical, empirical, and developmental studies that contribute to advancing knowledge and practice in mathematics education. The scope of the journal includes, but is not limited to, the following areas:

1. Ethnomathematics
This scope addresses research on the relationship between mathematics and cultural practices. It includes studies on how cultural values, traditions, and artifacts shape mathematical thinking and support the development of HOTS such as problem-solving, creativity, and reasoning. Examples include exploring mathematical patterns in traditional crafts, architecture, or local economic practices, and how these can be integrated into teaching and learning mathematics.

2. Realistic Mathematics Education (RME)
This scope emphasizes studies grounded in Freudenthal’s view of mathematics as a human activity connected to reality. It covers investigations into guided reinvention, progressive mathematization, didactical phenomenology, and self-developed models. Contributions may focus on how RME principles foster students’ higher-order thinking, such as reasoning, modeling, and critical reflection, as well as on innovative classroom practices that implement RME in various educational contexts.

3. Mathematical Abilities
This scope covers research on the cognitive and metacognitive processes underlying mathematical learning. Subtopics include reasoning (inductive, deductive, proportional), making mathematical connections, mathematical communication, multiple representations, critical and creative mathematical thinking, and problem-solving. Studies may also explore misconceptions, learning obstacles, and cognitive barriers that hinder the development of HOTS.

4. Technology in Mathematics Education
This scope encompasses the integration of technology into mathematics teaching and learning to enhance HOTS. It includes the use of digital tools such as GeoGebra, PhET simulations, AI-powered applications, MOOCs, and other innovative platforms. Studies may focus on how technology supports visualization, exploration, collaboration, and personalized learning in mathematics education.

5. Design and Development Research in Mathematics Education
This scope invites studies that design, develop, and validate innovative educational products, models, or interventions in mathematics education. The emphasis is on producing outputs that are valid, practical, reliable, and effective, while also advancing theoretical understanding of how such designs foster HOTS. Submissions may include validation studies, design-based research, or comprehensive developmental reports that document each phase of the design and implementation process.

Peer Review Process

Kognitif: Jurnal Riset HOTS Pendidikan Matematika is an national electronic journal published by Education and Talent Development Center Indonesia (ETDCI) in collaboration with Department of Mathematics Education, Faculty Mathematics and Natural Science, Universitas Negeri Makassar. The manuscript will be sent to at least two anonymous referees for contribution, originality, relevance, and presentation (double-blind review). Reviewers' comments are then sent to the corresponding author for necessary actions and responses. The Editor shall inform you of the results of the review as soon as possible, hopefully in 14 to 30 days. The submitted manuscript is first reviewed by an editor. It will be evaluated in the office, whether it is suitable for the Journal on Mathematics Education focus and scope or has a major methodological flaw and similarity score.

The editor will run a plagiarism check using turnitin check for the submitted articles before sending it to the reviewers. We do not process any plagiarised contents. If an article has over 20% of plagiarism based on the result of the check, we will send back the article to the author to be revised for the plagiarised contents. The journal is carried out by using Mendeley as a Tool Reference Manager. The language used in this journal is Indonesian and English.

The accepted research articles will be available online (free download) following the journal peer-reviewing process. The final decision of articles acceptance will be made by Editors according to Reviewers' comments. The articles sent back to the authors for revision should be returned to the editor without delay. The revised article returned later than 20 days will be considered as new submissions. The revised article can be sent to the editorial through the Online Submission Interface. The review process is as follows:

  1. Authors are advised to conduct a plagiarism check and ensure that their manuscript is free from copyright violations before submission.
  2. Submitted manuscripts will undergo an editorial review, primarily to check conformity with the journal’s scope and template. During this stage, the editor may communicate with the author to improve the manuscript before it is forwarded to reviewers or returned/declined.
  3. Manuscripts that pass the editorial screening will be sent to two reviewers for content evaluation using a double-blind peer review method.
  4. The review process will consider novelty, objectivity, methodology, scientific impact, conclusions, and references.
  5. Reviewers will provide recommendations for revision and/or acceptance/rejection of the manuscript.
  6. The editor will make a decision based on the reviewers’ recommendations as to whether the manuscript meets the requirements of Kognitif: Jurnal Riset HOTS Pendidikan Matematika.
  7. The decision of the Editor-in-Chief is final.
  8. All review processes are fully conducted through the OJS-based online system.
