Journal History

Kognitif: Jurnal Riset HOTS Pendidikan Matematika was established in 2021 to advance rigorous scholarship on Higher-Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) in mathematics education. Conceived as a forum connecting researchers, teacher-educators, and practitioners, the journal emphasizes theoretically grounded and empirically robust work that strengthens the design, enactment, and evaluation of HOTS-oriented teaching and assessment across diverse educational contexts.

From its inaugural issue, the journal has upheld international best practices in scholarly communication. Submissions undergo double-blind peer review by experts in mathematics education and related fields; editorial decisions are guided by transparency, fairness, and timeliness. The journal aligns its publication ethics with COPE principles and requires authors to disclose funding, data availability, and conflicts of interest in accordance with recognized research-integrity standards.

Over time, the journal has broadened its scope while retaining a clear focus on HOTS. It now welcomes research articles, systematic reviews, methodological notes, design-based studies, classroom interventions, and analytics-driven evaluations that address curriculum, pedagogy, assessment, technology integration, equity, and teacher professional learning in mathematics education. Contributions that integrate mixed methods, learning analytics, or theoretical innovation with classroom practicality are especially encouraged.

Kognitif is an open-access journal, ensuring immediate and permanent free availability of its contents to readers worldwide. The journal publishes quarterly and adopts a continuous-improvement approach to editorial quality—standardizing metadata, reference formatting, and research reporting to enhance discoverability and reproducibility. Articles are assigned persistent identifiers (DOIs) and are prepared with international readership in mind.

Hosted by the Education and Talent Development Center, and in collaboration with the Department of Mathematics, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Universitas Negeri Makassar (UNM), Indonesia, Kognitif is committed to expanding its global network of authors, reviewers, and readers. Consistent with this mission, the journal prioritizes clear English presentation, actively recruits editorial board members and reviewers from outside Indonesia, and welcomes collaborative international submissions that advance HOTS as a cornerstone of meaningful mathematical learning for the 21st century.

Accreditation and Strategic Milestones. In 2023, Kognitif achieved SINTA 4 accreditation. Beginning with the 2025volume, the journal publishes all articles in English to better serve its international audience and indexing readiness. Looking ahead to 2026, the journal aims to upgrade its national accreditation status and will submit applications to international indexing services (e.g., Index Copernicus and Scopus) in alignment with its sustained quality-assurance and internationalization initiatives.
