Abstract

This community service activity aimed to enhance environmental literacy and basic processing skills among students at SD Inpres Pattung, Gowa Regency. We conducted training on making natural liquid soap that integrated two key messages: the utilization of medicinal plant extracts (TOGA) and the valorization of household used cooking oil. This activity constituted the third in a series of three community service programs funded by PNBP (Non-Tax State Revenue) for the 2026 Fiscal Year, organized by the Department of Chemistry, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA), Universitas Negeri Makassar. The training employed demonstration and guided practice methods, covering the filtration of used cooking oil, dissolution of potassium hydroxide (KOH), the saponification reaction, the addition of extracts (basil leaves, pandan leaves, and sappan wood), and the incorporation of glycerin and preservatives, followed by packaging and labeling. To evaluate comprehension, we administered a ten-question quiz completed by eight students. The average correct response rate for the multiple-choice questions was 71.4%. The highest levels of understanding were observed in identifying the soap's main ingredients (100%) and naming personal protective equipment (100%), while the lowest understanding was noted regarding the function of glycerin (25%) and the correct sequencing of the process steps. The activity resulted in a prototype of natural liquid soap with educational labeling and fostered an initial understanding among students regarding the conversion of household waste into useful products.
